Sporting CP loses last two duels in league

UEFA Champions League

Sporting CP has lost its last second matches in the Primeira Liga. Against Santa Clara and Moreirense they lost each time by a goal difference.

On Saturday, Nov. 30, Sporting lost against the current number 4 in the standings, Santa Clara. Vinícius Lopes put the final score on the board, 0-1, after just over half an hour of play.

Last Thursday was a midweek game day. Against the number eight in the standings, Sporting CP also failed to win. Moreirense was too strong and won 2-1. Victor Gyökeres had put The Lions ahead after 12 minutes with a penalty. But the joy did not last long. Just five minutes later, Dinis Pinto scored the equalizer. Even before the halftime signal, Guilherme Schettine pushed in the equalizer, 2-1 at halftime and also the final score. Sporting CP had a lot of ball possession, but could not force many real chances and shots on goal, making another defeat unavoidable.

The last Champions League match did not go smoothly either. At home, they suffered a 1-5 blowout at the hands of The Gunners. Arsenal was dominant and was already leading 0-3 at halftime. A quick goal by the Portuguese brought the tension back, but Bukayo Saka and Belgian Leandro Trossard sealed the fate in Lisbon.

Sporting CP is still in the lead in the Primeira Liga despite these defeats. It is two points ahead of Benfica and Porto. Benfica has played one less match, though.

In the Champions League, the men from Lisbon are in 10th place with 10 points and should therefore be almost certain of the next round. Can we equalize on Tuesday night?
